The participants in the annual Dog Box Challenge raised more than R200 000 for the local animal shelter.

With the changes 2020 has created for non-profit organisations, the Kloof and Highway SPCA chose to host its annual Dog Box challenge with a difference – by making it virtual.

Backed by its firm base of supporters, the animal welfare raised R208 548.12 from the event.

“Nothing could dampen the spirit of the participants and everyone made their 24 hours as innovative and creative as they could while making sure they raised their bail money of R10 000,” said the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Brigitte Ferguson.

A couple of the more adventurous inmates included the organisation’s staff.

The financial manager, Drienie Englund spent her 24 hours in a horse trailer in what turned out to be a very comfy and warm environment.

The vet and vet nurse, Rivona Ramnanan and Lauren Paxton, took themselves off to a stable in the farm area of the SPCA.

Not far away from them Lara Mallory and Brigitte Ferguson snuggled down for the night with the resident calf, Winter.

“We are not sure who enjoyed their time more, Winter or Lara and myself,” laughed Ferguson.

Two of the frequent inmates, Leigh Corbett and Sonia Koenig, spent their 24 hours in their cars and only left the confined space for the necessary breaks.

“This showed true loyalty to the rules,” said Ferguson.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA’s manager, Barbara Patrick, set up a comfortable lounger in the beautiful surrounds of her garden.

It was also Barbara’s sixth Dog Box fundraiser and she is now one of the longest running contestants.

“Shane Cox and Pierre Venter-Maher deserve a mention for their unwavering commitment to every Dog Box. They have never questioned entering and always add an impressive amount to the total,” said Ferguson. “Fiona Williams and Brenda Harding, chose Giba Gorge as their venue, we thank them for their enthusiasm.”

She thanked all of the participants, Shane Cox and Pierre Maher, Tracey Dragsund, Megan Stow, Anita Van Aswegen, Jake Taskes, Sandra Pautz, Louise Mitchell, Sarah Brauns, Mandy Somerville, Shannon Somerville, Tara Aberdeen, Lucille Mason and Judy Van Der Westhuizen, David, Katy and Conner Bramley for taking part in the event.

“2020’s Dog Box was virtual, but it proved to be a success and we thank every single inmate and every single supporter who chose to donate to this fundraiser. Thank you all so much,” said Ferguson.
