The Museum of Dogs, South Africa’s first museum dedicated to dogs, will open on Saturday, July 27, 2024. It is situated on Keerom Street in Cape Town’s city center.

Founder’s Tribute to Man’s Best Friend

Karel van der Vyver, the founder of this unique museum, will establish it in a historic 350-year-old building in Gardens, Cape Town. Having grown up in a household filled with dogs, Van der Vyver aims to create a gathering place for dog lovers, as reported by capetownetc.

What Can Visitors Expect from The Museum of Dogs?

The museum is dedicated to celebrating dogs and their roles in our society as companions, comforters, and friends. Visitors will enjoy interactive displays and hear stories from dog owners about their pets.

The museum will also feature a brief history of dogs in South Africa, a photography exhibition by Johannesburg-based pet photographer Emma O’Brien, and short films about dogs from around the world. Emma, a professional photographer for over 17 years, has won several awards for her work. Originally from the UK, she moved to South Africa in 2009 and has become one of the country’s most sought-after dog photographers.

Visitors can contribute to the museum’s collection by writing their own dog stories in a dedicated book. Selected stories will be included in the displays.

The Museum of The Dog in America

In New York City, the American Kennel Club (AKC) Museum of the Dog offers a similar experience. This museum boasts over 180 pieces of canine-inspired artwork and includes interactive digital exhibits. Additionally, it houses one of the world’s largest libraries dedicated to dogs.
