The South African Guide-Dogs Association is excited to announce the launch of its second annual Wear Your Shades Day campaign on Friday, 18 October. This nationwide initiative aims to raise awareness and support for individuals with visual impairments while highlighting the importance of eye health.
Wear Your Shades Day is not just a fundraising effort; it’s a movement encouraging all South Africans to stand in solidarity with the visually impaired community. By participating and purchasing a R20 sticker, you’re not only helping fund essential services but also contributing to a more inclusive society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy freedom and independence.
“Each year, we aim to transform the lives of approximately 800 individuals by providing Assistance Dogs and long cane training,” says Pieter van Niekerk, spokesperson for the SA Guide-Dogs Association. As a visually impaired individual and proud guide-dog owner, he emphasizes that Wear Your Shades Day is a powerful way for the public to engage and support the association’s mission to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those with disabilities.
How to Get Involved:
- Purchase a Sticker: Show your support by buying a R20 sticker through www.guidedog.org.za, contacting the SA Guide-Dogs offices, or finding them at selected retailers like Pick n Pay, Falco Milano, Big Blue, Pet World, and BUCO Hardware.
- Wear Your Shades: On 18 October, don your coolest shades alongside your sticker to raise awareness about visual impairment and eye health.
- Share Your Shine: The SA Guide-Dogs Association invites you to celebrate what makes you unique. Wear your shades and share what makes you shine, regardless of your abilities.
Funds raised from this campaign will directly support the SA Guide-Dogs Association’s programs, including the breeding, raising, and training of Assistance Dogs for the visually impaired, physically disabled, and children on the autism spectrum, as well as providing Orientation and Mobility services.
