MEET DR INGRID DE WET

Our Vet’s Pick articles are selected by veterinary professionals. One of the special professionals we’ve partnered with is Dr Ingrid de Wet from Country Animal Clinic in Somerset West, Cape Town. We’re thrilled to have her on board and grateful for her expert insights reflected in our articles.

CAREER
Dr Ingrid helps animals at Country Animal Clinic where she has been a partner since 2011. A big priority and something Dr Ingrid is passionate about is making patients feel comfortable. It’s extremely rewarding and heart-warming when very nervous pets become more comfortable and confident after a few visits to the practice. She also tries to really listen to and understand her clients’ needs in her pursuit to solve their problems. In fact, clients can rest assured that she will treat their pets as if they were her own (incredibly spoilt) fur children.

“I have loved and lost many pets and I understand how stressed you feel when they are ill or when you have to leave them for surgery. I want my pet to have the best medical treatment available and I think everyone else’s pets deserve that too. We go through the ups and downs together and it’s a privilege to be a part of my clients’ families.”

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Her earliest memories include the presence of dogs and cats. This is not surprising as Snoopy, her rescue fur sibling and first friend, joined the family when they were both four months old.

As time went by, Dr Ingrid’s love for animals only grew. As a teen she loved reading, particularly James Herriot’s books about life as a veterinarian, as well as watching any TV shows about veterinarians. However, it was her time at Country Animal Clinic in 2001 and 2002 job shadowing that solidified her love of animals and sparked a love for medicine.

Today, she still feels most at peace in the presence of animals. “Nothing beats spending your whole day with animals. When I am with them, the rest of the world fades away a little bit.”

FAMILY OF SIX

Dr Ingrid and Dr Morné have a smart, sassy daughter named Elizabeth who also wholeheartedly loves animals. The remaining members of the family include the ultra-loving and caring Mowgli, a ‘Wineland’ Retriever rescued from a wine farm during a vaccination campaign; the fast and friendly Alvin, a beautiful Greyhound crossed with a Flat-coated Retriever; and 100% Jack Russell terrier Dawie, a daredevil escape artist famed for destroying things and delivering morning kisses.
