Stuck inside with nothing to do? Teach your dog something new!
Here are eight basic commands every good dog should know.
- Sit: Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose and move your hand back until he is in a sitting position.
- Walk nicely on a leash: Give your dog treats for following you on the leash.
- Not jump on visitors: Every time you come home and your dog jumps, walk away. Then, walk back in to calmly greet him until the behavior stops.
- Come: Lean and gently pull his leash while saying “come.” Give him a treat for following the command.
- Stay: Have your dog sit, then give him a treat for staying in the sitting position. Gradually add distance while saying, “stay.”
- Leave it: With a treat in your hand, say “leave it,” wait until your dog stops trying to get it, then give him a treat from the other hand.
- Drop it: Tell your dog to “drop it” and when he does, reward him with a treat and replace what you took with a toy.
- Down: Hold a treat in your hand and guide your dog to the floor. Say “down” and give him the treat.
