Cape Town – Local pet industry organisations were over the moon after bagging global awards.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA and the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) were awarded the Best Animal Welfare NPO in South Africa and the Most Compassionate Animal Welfare Organisation in South Africa, respectively, at the Pet Products and Services Awards.
They were notified of their nomination earlier this year. A motivation and brief description of their work was required and submitted last month. Both organisations were notified of their awards this month.
Cape of Good Hope SPCA senior strategist Shane Everts said they were surprised and humbled to receive such a prestigious award and international recognition.
“The award will create awareness abroad and draw attention to animal welfare related challenges faced by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. We hope this awareness will draw foreign investment and funding from international markets to continue our work on the front line in the fight against animal cruelty. (This) would not be possible without the support of our donors.
“The organisation and its staff are often subject to trying and challenging circumstances. Daily, our inspectors face intimidating and often threatening situations where animals are at risk or in distress. It means a great deal to know that our work and effort to prevent cruelty to animals is recognised.
“Thank you to the award organisers, our nominator and loyal supporters. Our work would not be possible without your continued support,” he said.
Head of fund-raising and communications at AWSS Jessica Perrins said they were over the moon.
“Recognising animals as sentient beings with a right to a good quality of life, devoid of pain and suffering lies at the heart of everything we do at AWSS. Receiving (this award) means the world to us, I am so proud,” she said.
“At AWSS we pride ourselves on the quality of life all our animals have. Our rescues are well cared for, showered with love and most importantly happy. This award would not have been possible without our compassionate, dedicated staff, volunteers and supporters,” she added.
The awards were part of the UK’s LUXlife Magazine’s annual excellence awards.
LUXlife Magazine stated on their website: “Launched in 2018, the Pet Product and Services Awards seek to spotlight those individuals, organisations and enterprises who strive to make an outstanding contribution to the pet industry, representing the most dedicated of our pets’ caretakers and providers. Previous winners span the whole range of the industry, from premium pet food suppliers to best cat scratching product brands.
“The Pet Product (and) Services Awards 2022 (were) judged purely on merit. In order to determine our lucky few, our in-house research team carefully analyses the information that is available both online and in the public domain, as well as any materials supplied by nominees.
“Additionally, nominees are provided with the opportunity to prepare a short case file disclosing details of their chosen business sector and practice, as well as any previous accolades awarded. Case files, product samples and media packs are all accepted but are not mandatory to be included in the Pet Product (and) Services Awards.”
