Hydrotherapy for dogs is no longer just for post-surgery recovery. Across South Africa, water-based rehabilitation is helping dogs of all ages recover from injuries, manage arthritis, build strength, shed excess weight, and stay active well into their golden years. For many pet parents, it is also reshaping the way they think about long-term, proactive pet care.

The Healing Power of Water

What makes hydrotherapy so effective is simple — water supports the body while providing gentle resistance. This allows dogs to move more freely without placing strain on painful joints or healing injuries.

Bianca Duthie, Veterinary Physiotherapist at Pets in Balance, explains that hydrotherapy can improve muscle strength, mobility, posture, balance, and cardiovascular fitness — all within a low-impact environment.

“Hydrotherapy allows us to start controlled exercise much sooner than we could on solid ground,” says Duthie. “It also helps restore confidence and encourages a more natural gait pattern during recovery.”

The temperature and depth of the water can be adjusted to suit specific rehabilitation goals, making it a highly personalised form of treatment.

Recovery, Strength, and a New Lease on Life

For a small dog named Mr. Miyagee, hydrotherapy became a lifelong part of his care. What began as treatment for a knee sprain as a puppy later became essential when he suffered ruptured cruciate ligaments in both hind legs. With surgery not a viable option, hydrotherapy became his primary path to maintaining strength and mobility.

“It did not just help him heal,” says his pet mom, Lindi Pieterse. “It gave him the tools to stay strong and continue living a happy, mobile life.” Watching him move freely in water after struggling to stand on land, she says, was nothing short of remarkable.

Swimming Into the Senior Years

Brinjal, a nearly 13-year-old Dachshund-cross-Boston Terrier, is living proof that hydrotherapy is not just for rehabilitation — it is a lifestyle. He still swims laps regularly and competes in annual swimming galas.

Following knee surgery, Brinjal was back in the pool just one week later as part of his recovery plan. “The water allowed him to stay active without stressing his healing knee,” says his pet mom, Ancheri Luus. “Swimming kept him physically strong and mentally happy during recovery.”

Today, swimming remains a cornerstone of his daily routine — and a major reason he continues to thrive.

Why Proactive Pet Care Matters

One of the biggest misconceptions about hydrotherapy is that it is only for injured or recovering pets. Experts are quick to challenge this thinking — water-based therapy can play just as important a role in preventative care as it does in rehabilitation.

Whether it is supporting joint health in active younger dogs or helping senior pets maintain their mobility for longer, proactive care can significantly improve quality of life before serious problems ever develop.
