Streaming service Netflix has crafted its fair share of the weird and the wonderful, but its latest venture is plain heart-warming.
New documentary Pick of the Litter follows puppies in training to become guide dogs for blind people.
Netflix’s synopsis reads: “Pick of the Litter follows a litter of puppies from the moment they’re born and begin their quest to become Guide Dogs for the Blind, the ultimate canine career.
“Cameras follow these pups through a two-year odyssey as they train to become dogs whose ultimate responsibility is to protect their blind partners from harm.
“Along the way, the dogs meet a community of dedicated individuals who train them to do amazing, life-changing things in the service of their human.
“The stakes are high and not every dog can make the cut. Only the best of the best. The pick of the litter.”
The stars of the show are based in California, working hard with US organisation Guide Dogs for the Blind, which receives 1,100 applicants every year.
The litter is named ‘P’ – which gives them their names Phil, Patriot, Potomac, Primrose and Poppet.
While The Daily Beast reported that only two thirds of the pooches make the final cut, the ones that can’t quite make it are given homes with new and loving owners.
Those who do go on to become guide dogs are critically important – an average day in the life of a blind person is made possible by the dogs’ training, obedience and loyalty.
The documentary also features testimonials from blind people who can attest to their furry friends’ brilliance.
